Five Easy Ways to Slow Down the Aging Process

1. Laugh More ~ when you laugh your body releases endorphins which help to reduce pain, relaxes you and keeps the mind balanced. As the saying goes “laughter is the best medicine!”

2.Eat Less Sugar ~ This can be difficult to do, especially when you find yourself drowning in Easter chocolate from a few weeks ago. If you get the sugar craving, opt for dark chocolate or fruit (like tasty mango or strawberries!) which have naturally occurring sugars. These are much better than the sweeteners and preservative cookies and candy contain which give you a short energy burst and then a terrible crash and burn. Sugar also suppresses white blood cell activity, meaning your immune system is going to be compromised.

3.Feel the Love ~ Love thyself, love thy neighbour. People who love themselves and surround themselves with great people are known to be happier than people who have low self esteem or have bad influences in their lives. This happiness translates to a more active, healthier life!

4.Say Bye Bye to Booze ~ As much as a glass of red wine has been said to be good for the heart, alcohol in excess can do a lot of long term damage. It dehydrates your body, puts stress on your liver, increases the risk of heart disease, increases blood pleasure and facilitates rapid aging of the skin (not to mention dilated blood vessels on the face and chest).

5.Exhale ~ Learn to relax! It sounds obvious but training your brain to hear yourself breathe can actually reduce elevated blood pressure and can prevent deep frown lines or wrinkles. By taking a minute or two here and there to just focus on your breathing you will relax and be able to continue on with your busy day with a sense of calm.

Tips to Every Day Calm

Around this time of year stopping to relax and rejuvenate seems out of the question but by depriving your body of sleep, exercise and proper nutrition you're exerting more energy than necessary to get your tasks completed.

Just as you might schedule out errands and chores to be completed, try writing out things you can incorporate into your day to keep you working at an optimal level. Try scheduling in a healthy lunch or snack, like a quick salad or vegetarian sandwich. By making a conscious decision to eat well (especially in the middle of the day when so many people neglect to find proper food) you'll be less likely to reach for that bag of chips. Write down your bed time and stick to it. This might seem juvenile but sometimes it can be hard to know when to put your work down and catch up on some Zzzz's.

Speaking of sleep, make your bed a haven. Invest in sheets and pillows that are irresistible to you. Keep all laptops and work related papers far away. Your bed should be a place of rest, not your office desk. Additionally, avoid dramatic or thrilling books near the bed, it is easy to get sucked in and end up staying awake hours after you planned to. My secret is keeping an old college textbook next to my bed -- one page in and my eyes are instantly droopy!

Tips to everyday calm...

1. Let relaxation take over with a long, luxurious bath. Schedule a meeting with yourself and your favourite bath goodies. At Skindulgence we have tons of treats for the tub, from bath bombs and loofahs to salts and oils to help you soak away your stresses. Don't forget to dim the lights, light some candles and try to stop all those racings thoughts. Be patient with yourself, peace and relaxation will wash over you once you are able to let go of your day-to-day bothers (even if it is for only twenty minutes)!

2. Jot your thoughts. Writing nightly (or even better, throughout the whole day) can help to center yourself as well as better organize your day and mind. Buy a journal with a cover that speaks to you, be it an ocean scene, sparkles or a cute cartoon picture, and you'll be more likely to want to reach for it. Don't stop at To-Do lists, write down your feelings and musings. Be as honest as possible and you might be surprised at how clear your head is.

At Skindulgence, we know that relaxation is key to a healthy mind and body. Keep checking back here at the Skindulgence blog for frequent tips to de-stress and recollect.

Sincerely,
